The capital and largest city in South Korea, Seoul’s metropolitan area counts over 25 million residents. This is over half the population of the country, and ranks the Seoul Capital Area as the fourth largest metropolitan area in the world (the city proper is the 14th most populous in the world). First appearing in historical records over two millenia ago in 18 BCE, Seoul has not always been the capital of the succession of dynasties and states based in the Korean Peninsula but has always been a major commercial and cultural centre throughout its history.
After a long period of isolation lasting until the 19th Century, Seoul modernized through contact and trade with foreign states as well as offshore investment. Emerging from the upheaval of Japanese occupation and the Korean War, Seoul modernized rapidly under an economic boom in the 1960s to become one of Asia’s most prosperous metropolitan economies and a global city.
Located on the Han River, Seoul is ringed by picturesque mountains, the highest peak being Mount Bukhan, whose national park is one of the world’s most visited. Five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, many located in the old city of the Joseon Dynasty, can be visited inside the Seoul Capital Area, as can more modern landmarks and attractions such as the National Museum of Korea, indoor amusement park Lotte World, and many contemporary high-rise towers in the Gangnam district.
Seoul is the centre of entertainment and media in South Korea, and its best known products such as K-pop music and Korean Wave television and films are exported across Asia and beyond. It is a vibrant showcase for Korean and international cuisine as well. Seoul was the host city of the 1988 Summer Olympic Games, and many Olympic venues are still in use across the metropolis. Seoul is served by two major airports, the larger Incheon International Airport, which is the main international air travel hub, and the smaller, regional Gimpo International Airport, which handles mostly domestic flights with a few flights to South Korea’s neighbouring nations.
