We will discuss many of the major worldwide destinations served via our affiliate network on this blog. Today, we’ll take a closer look at the second largest metro area in the United States, Los Angeles.
The sprawling modern metropolis of Los Angeles, commonly known as L.A., has come a long way from its early days as a Spanish ranch settlement and mission over two centuries ago. With over 18 million residents in the Greater Los Angeles area, the metro is the second most populous in the United States after New York City and is often considered the economic, cultural, and entertainment counterbalance to New York City on the West Coast.
It is entertainment that has made L.A.’s name worldwide, or rather that of its Hollywood area, the centre of American film and television production and a major hub for the music industry as well. The major movie studios, massive corporate bodies that develop, finance, produce, release, and market movies to the U.S. and the rest of the world, are all based in Los Angeles.
The glamour of Hollywood, with its famous stars, exclusive clubs, restaurants, and parties, and glitzy red-carpet premieres, is ever-present but becomes especially bright each February for the Academy Awards or the Oscars, the American film industry premier awards gala. Other major entertainment awards shows such as the Grammys for music, the Emmys for television, and the Golden Globes for film and television are also hosted annually in Los Angeles.
Adjacent to Hollywood and fed by its economic boon is Beverly Hills, a place synonymous with wealth, glamour, and exclusive retail, restaurants and services. Oceanside communities such as Santa Monica and Long Beach boast a relaxed beachfront culture, with residents and visitors alike enjoying swimming, surfing, tanning, and any numbers of other outdoor activities in the favourable year-round climate. Mansions and residences of the rich and famous sprawl across the ridges and canyons of the Hollywood Hills. The office towers of multinational business and finance companies rise above the downtown area. Major cultural institutions and landmarks such as the Los Angeles County Art Museum, the Getty Museum, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the Griffith Observatory are spread across the city as well.
While there are multiple airports in the Greater Los Angeles area, Los Angeles International Airport, better known by its code of LAX, is the major air transport hub, the third busiest airport in the United States and the sixth busiest in the world.
