We will discuss many of the major worldwide destinations served via our affiliate network on this blog. The second part of our series on Hawaii continues today with the island paradise of Maui.
To the northwest of the Big Island lies Maui, the second-largest and third most-populous island in the chain and perhaps the most favoured by tourists and vacationers. Formed by two shield volcanoes, Maui is dominated by the eroded remains of one (now the West Maui Mountains or Mauna Kahalawi) and the dormant peak of another (Haleakala, a National Park). The valley between the heights gives Maui its nickname, the Valley Isle.
Attracting over 3 million visitors in recent years, Maui’s key industry is tourism, especially since the decline of its agricultural plantations. Maui has won the title of Best Island in the World multiple times. Its main city is Kahului, located in the island’s central valley and home to its busiest international airport and cruise ship docks. Major tourist areas are located on the west and south coasts of Maui, including the centres of Kihei, Ka’anapali, and Lahaina, known for their inviting beaches, charming shops and restaurants, and oceanfront promenades. The Hana Highway along the less-inhabited east coast makes a spectacular scenic drive.
Clustered around Maui are the less-developed and more sparsely-inhabited islands of Molokai and Lanai. Molokai, once known as the location of a leper colony, is mostly ranchland and undeveloped for tourism, while Lanai boasts a pair of Four Seasons resorts and many off-road exploration opportunities. The uninhabited island of Kaho’olawe is located to the south of Maui.
