We will discuss many of the major worldwide destinations served via our affiliate network on this blog. Today’s destination is the rapidly-modernized jewel of the Persian Gulf, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
One of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is the most populous city in the country, as well as the most economically and politically significant of the emirates (along with Abu Dhabi). Dubai has emerged as the business centre of the Middle East with important links to the oil reserves of the Arabian Peninsula, a major air and sea transport hub, and a centre of remarkable modern high-rise architecture and exclusive luxury.
After several smaller settlements in the Dubai area faded over the centuries, a permanent fishing village sprung up in the 19th Century that grew into an important regional port (later to become the modern deep water Port Rashid). The discovery of offshore oil in the 1960s saw a major influx of wealth into Dubai and a burst of infrastructure improvements and foreign investment that has seen the fishing village and port at the edge of the desert become a global city.
Most visitors to Dubai arrive into Dubai International Airport, the 7th busiest passenger and cargo airport in the world. Dubai is increasingly a popular tourist destination as well as a corporate hub, especially for shopping at one of its 70 malls, including Dubai Mall, the world’s largest. Its many exclusive hotels, shops, and restaurants cater to corporate travellers and pleasure-seeking vacationers alike. Numerous entertainment attractions are concentrated in Dubailand, a complex of retail, accomodations, dining, sports, and entertainment facilities that will cover almost 300 square kilometres once completed.
Dubai’s world-class high-rise architecture is also a major feature of the city. The world’s tallest building, the 828-metre-high Burj Khalifa, towers above the city skyline, reflecting both the technological marvels of contemporary engineering and the pattern design traditions of Islamic architecture. Another iconic skyscraper in Dubai is the Burj Al Arab, a luxury hotel which has stood on a man-made island just off Jumeirah Beach since opening in 1999. Its elegant curved design reflects the sail of a traditional Arab ship called a dhow. Massive terraforming projects in the Gulf have given rise to vast exclusive neighbourhoods in artificial islands: the Palm Jumeirah and the World Islands.
