Brisbane is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland, with a metropolitan population of 2.3 million. Founded as a penal settlement on a bend of the Brisbane River just inland from Moreton Bay in the mid 1820s, Brisbane was opened to free settlement in 1842 and late incorporated as a city in 1902. Brisbane was a major Allied military base during World War II, hosting over a million U.S. service personnel during the war. Now a modern city with a diversified economy, Brisbane has become a major business hub in Australia.

Tourism is a key feature of Brisbane’s economy. Australia’s third most popular urban tourist destination after Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane attracts many visitors with its extensive parkland, botanical gardens, zoos, and animal sanctuaries. The city is also known for distinctive architecture, including the Story and Merivale Bridges and the brisbanecommon Queenslander architectural style, visible in the handsome bungalows around the city and its suburbs.

Brisbane is also important as a gateway to Australia’s most popular and well-attended resort towns, the Gold Coast just to the north of the city and the Sunshine Coast directly to the south. Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are Queensland’s second and third largest urban areas after Brisbane, and operate as major holiday destinations with a plethora of beaches, national parks, theme parks, canals, high-rises, shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are renowned in particular for their surfing, considered among the best in the world. Gold Coast is the host city for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, an international athletic competition that Brisbane has also previously hosted.

Brisbane Airport, Australia’s third busiest airport after those of Sydney and Melbourne, is the main air travel hub for the region. Both Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast have airports as well, which mainly serve domestic and regional international tourist air traffic.
