Bangkok has a population of over 8 million in the city proper with around 14 million residents in the larger metropolitan region, comprising 22% of Thailand’s total national population. By far Thailand’s main centre for business, finance, transport, retail, and culture as well as a major regional hub in all of those categories, Bangkok is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia as well as globally, attracting millions of visitors annually.
First recorded in the 15th Century when it was litte more than a small trading outpost, Bangkok grew in strategic importance due to its location at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River. Made a capital by Thai kings in the 18th Century, Bangkok (a colloquial name that stands in for a much longer royal ceremonial name in the Thai language) grew to national importance, and became a bustling modern metropolis behind domestic development and foreign investment through the 1980s and 1990s.
Though now a small portion of a sprawling city, Bangkok’s historic centre is located on Rattanakosin Island, comprising the venerable Grand Palace, the City Pillar Shrine, and several major Buddhist temples. As Thailand’s capital, Bangkok is also home to numerous national museums. Street life in the city is famously lively, and the tourist district concentrated around Khao San Road offers services for many visitors. Newer districts for business and retail boast modern skyscraper office towers and some of the largest shopping malls in Asia.
Bangkok is served by two major airports. The newer Bangkok International Airport, also known as Suvarnabhumi, is now the major global hub for the city, which is one of Asia’s busiest air travel hubs. It serves over 50 million passengers per year, and is currently being expanded to handle an annual capacity of 60 million. The older Don Mueang International Airport now handles mostly domestic flights along with lower-cost international carriers.
