We will discuss many of the major worldwide destinations served via our affiliate network on this blog. Today, we visit the metropolis of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle.

Seattle is the largest city in Washington State and, with 3.6 million inhabitants, the largest metropolitan area in the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. and Canada. One of the fastest-growing cities in the country, Seattle was a Native American settlement for millenia until a small white settlement sprang up in 1851, settling on the site of its current downtown core the next year and adopting the name of a local Native chief. Seattle’s first major industry was logging, followed by a further boom during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s (for which Seattle was a major transportation hub) and another in the early 20th Century due to shipbuilding.

Since the Second World War, Seattle became known for aircraft design and production as the headquarters and main manufacturing facility for Boeing and later as a high-tech business mecca and home to Microsoft, Amazon, and other tech giants. Seattle is also renowned as a coffee-drinking town, most famously as the home base of Starbucks. The Port of Seattle is also a major part of the metropolitan economy, recently ranked as the third largest container shipping port in North America. Seattle is also an increasingly seattlepopular cruise ship destination. Its main airport is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, often referred to as Sea-Tac Airport.

Located on an isthmus between the Pacific’s Puget Sound and Lake Washington, Seattle and its surrounding area is a paradise for outdoors enthusiasts. Hiking, climbing, and skiing in the Olympic and Cascade Mountains (including the iconic Mount Rainier, visible from the city centre) that ring the city are popular activities, as are any number of physical activities in Seattle’s superb city park system. For the more sedate among us, Seattle offers numerous museums, galleries, and other attractions. The city also has a long and proud tradition of performing arts and especially music, from its active jazz clubs in the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s to the alternative grunge wave of the early ’90s to the varied independent music scene of today.
