Today’s destination is the City of Brotherly Love and the cradle of American liberty, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the fifth most populous city in the United States, and the centre of the sixth largest metropolitan area in the country, Philadelphia has been one of America’s most important cities since the 17th Century. Founded in 1682 by William Penn to serve as the capital of the English colony named after him, Philadelphia was built by early colonists where the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers met.
The largest port city in Britain’s North American colonies by 1750, Philadelphia was of vital importance to the American Revolution as the meeting place for the Continental Congress both before and after the war and thus the location where both of the key founding documents of the United States of America – the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution – were signed. Philadelphia was also the state and national capital until the end of the 18th Century. In the subsequent two centuries, Philadelphia grew into an industrial and commercial centre in the American Northeast while becoming home to a great number of new immigrants and modern institutions.
Many of Philadelphia’s top visitor attractions today are closely connected to its Revolutionary War history. Independence Hall was the venue for both the debate and adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of Independence National Historic Park, which also includes the city’s most famous landmark and one of the enduring symbols of American democracy, the Liberty Bell. Philadelphia is home to many other museums and cultural institutions, most famously the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one of the country’s largest art museums but even better known for its flight of steps used in the 1976 boxing film Rocky.
Philadelphia is a major sports town, home to the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL, the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball, the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, and the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers. Its cuisine is also well-known, particular its cheesesteak sandwich. Philadelphia is home to 10,000 acres of parkland, with the city’s largest public park, Fairmount Park, accounting for 9,200 of those acres. The city is an active business centre and an important educational hub as well, with campuses of the Ivy League school the University of Pennsylvania as well as top colleges like Temple and Drexel all located within the city.
Philadelphia International Airport – the 15th busiest in the world – is the major airport for the Philadelphia metro area, which stretches out of Pennsylvania and into the neighbouring states of New Jersey and Delaware.
