The Invictus Games 2017 will be held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada between the dates of September 23rd and September 30th, 2017. A multi-sport competition in the tradition of the Paralympic Games, the Invictus Games feature personnel and veterans of worldwide armed services who are wounded, injured, or sick competing in 12 different sports.Created by Great Britain’s Prince Harry, himself an armed forces veteran, the Invictus Games (like their inspiration in the United States, the Warrior Games) raise awareness and esteem for veterans physically affected by their service. Toronto 2017 will be the third Invictus Games, after the inaugural games in London, UK in 2014 and last year’s competition in Orlando, Florida (the Games are due to be held in Australia next year). Athletes from 15 countries will compete in the games, including host nation Canada, the United States, European nations such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and new entries Romania and Ukraine, as well as Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq, Jordan, and Afghanistan.
Medals in sports such as swimming, athletics, archery, golf, auto racing, wheelchair basketball and rugby, and many more will be contested at venues across the Greater Toronto Area. Opening and closing ceremonies will be held in downtown Toronto at the Air Canada Centre, featuring internationally-renowned Canadian musical performers such as Bryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, and Alessia Cara, as well as U.S. stars such as Bruce Springsteen and Kelly Clarkson.
