Today’s destination is the year-round resort town of Collingwood.

Located approximately 150 kilometres (or a 2-hour drive) north of Toronto on the southernmost shore of Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay, Collingwood is a town of 21,000 inhabitants.

Incorporated in 1858 and named after a famed British naval officer, Collingwood was already a shipping and shipbuilding centre on Lake Huron by this time, having obtained a railroad connection in 1855. For a century between their opening in 1883 and their closure in 1986, the Collingwood Shipyards were the town’s primary employer and produced merchant and military ships for use on the Great Lakes and the high seas. Numerous new manufacturers opened Collingwood-area operations through the 1970s and 1980s, making it the largest industrial centre in the region.

Collingwood is one of Ontario’s major recreation centres. Proximate to Wasaga Beach Provincial Park and numerous golf courses, Collingwood is also known for its skiing at nearby Blue Mountain Resort on the Niagara Escarpment, Ontario’s busiest ski resort and the third-busiest in Canada. Hiking trails, mountain biking, rock climbing, and spelunking in scene caves are also important outdoor recreational activities in the Collingwood area. Collingwood has a lake port for ships and smaller watercraft, as well as the small Collingwood Airport just outside of town.
