Global Alliance Worldwide Chauffeured Services operates in the Greater Toronto Area of Southern Ontario, Canada. Although Global Alliance provides services around the world through our network of affiliates, the core of our services are performed in Toronto and its surrounding region. In this continuing feature, we will detail notable locations and communities in the Greater Toronto Area (or GTA) where we often provide limousine service. Today we travel to the north to the town of Aurora.
With a population of over 50,000, Aurora is one of the smaller centres in the suburban GTA, though it still ranks in the top 100 most populous municipalities in Canada. First settled in the 1790s when Yonge Street was extended northwards towards Lake Simcoe, Aurora counted over 2,000 residents by its centennial near the end of the 19th Century, when railway connections helped it to grow into a thriving industrial town.
Aurora was the childhood hometown of Lester B. Pearson, Prime Minister of Canada and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. It is also home to the Hillary House National Historic Site, a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture. Cultural attractions include the Aurora Cultural Centre (housed a restored former schoolhouse) and Theatre Aurora, an active theatrical company which is based in the town’s Factory Theatre. Its town library dates back to 1855, although the current library building opened in 2001. An exciting new development known as the Aurora Promenade is expected to reinvigorate Aurora’s downtown area in coming years.
