Global Alliance Worldwide Chauffeured Services operates in the Greater Toronto Area of Southern Ontario, Canada. Although Global Alliance provides services around the world through our network of affiliates, the core of our services are performed in Toronto and its surrounding region. In this continuing feature, we will detail notable locations and communities in the Greater Toronto Area (or GTA) where we often provide limousine service. Today we travel east to the lakeside suburb of Pickering.

East of Toronto along Lake Ontario and bissected by Highway 401, the City of Pickering is part of Durham Region and has a population of 88,000 residents. Settled by British immigrants starting in the 1770s, Pickering was named for a town in North Yorkshire, England. With its then-main thoroughfare of Kingston Road, which connected York (later Toronto) with Kingston to the east, Pickering had only 180 residents in 1813 but, like much of the Greater Toronto Area, experienced great growth after World War II. Although Pickering’s growth has slowed compared to much of the surrounding GTA, its population is still expected to double to 190,000 residents by 2031.

Although marked demographically by a Caucasian majority, Pickering is also home to sizable minorites of South Asian and African descent. The city developed out from Frenchman’s Bay, still a focus for residents and visitors through the focal point development of Nautical Village and Millennium Square, a popular destination along the Waterfront Trail during the summer with many free events and popular cafes, restaurants, and shops. Pickering Town Centre is the city’s major mall, located between Kingston Road and the 401 at Liverpool Road.

Pickering is a major energy centre for all of Southern Ontario, as home to Ontario Power Generation’s Pickering Nuclear Generating Station on the shores of Lake Ontario, one of the city’s main employers and a key to Pickering’s status as Durham Region’s jobs centre.
