Oakville’s population is approximately 180,000. Established in 1827 in along the military road known as Dundas Street, Oakville was initially known for shipbuilding, and its economy has retained its industrial and manufacturing character to the modern era with major company factories and oil refineries (most of which have closed) and even to the present day, with Ford’s Canadian headquarters and assembly plant still operating along the Queen Elizabeth Way highway and driving the city’s prosperity. Oakville is also home to the national headquarters of Tim Hortons and Siemens.

West of Mississauga along the shores of Lake Ontario, Oakville is centered on its old downtown, clustered around Oakville Harbour and home to the annual Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival. Another major annual event is the Waterfront Festival at Coronation Park, which offers rides, food and drink, vendors, and free concerts by big-name Canadian musical acts. The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts and Oakville Galleries are important cultural institutions in the city. Oakville has an excellent sporting heritage as well, and is home to the prestigious Glen Abbey Golf, which hosts the century-old Canadian Open on the PGA Tour circuit.
