Today’s location is to the north of the city, the town of Newmarket.

Newmarket is located north of the City of Toronto and is the seat of York Region. Its population sits at approximately 80,000 residents. A popular commuter suburb of Toronto, it has frequently been highly ranked among small cities in livability index.

The environs of Newmarket are characterized by a series of interlinked creeks and rivers, the largest of which is the East Holland River. The river’s location made it a major portage route between Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe, and thus an ideal location for local settlement in the early 19th Century. The town got its name from a popular market held along its historic Main Street, which was restored as a Provincial Heritage Conservation District in the 1980s and refurbished in the new millennium.

The downtown area centered on Main Street has been a focal point in Newmarket’s commercial, social, and cultural life for a century. Numerous historic and heritage buildings, houses, churches, and cemeteries can be found in the area, most notably Newmarket’s Old Town Hall and Courthouse. Newmarket Public Library is also located in the downtown, as is the town’s GO Transit station.

A new urban park, Riverwalk Commons, opened recently in this historic community near Fairy Lake, with a weekly Farmer’s Market, performance stage, community centre, and connections with popular established trail systems in the Newmarket region. Another key retail and public gathering space in Newmarket is Upper Canada Mall, northwest of downtown. The 400-seat Newmarket Theatre, the town’s premier performance arts space, is located southeast of downtown next to the sports and recreation space of the Magna Centre.
