Global Alliance Worldwide Chauffeured Services operates in the Greater Toronto Area of Southern Ontario, Canada. Although Global Alliance provides services around the world through our network of affiliates, the core of our services are performed in Toronto and its surrounding region. In this continuing feature, we will detail notable locations and communities in the Greater Toronto Area (or GTA) where we often provide limousine service. Our destination today is east of Toronto, the town of Ajax.

Although its population tops 100,000, Ajax is classified as a town. 25 km east of Toronto along the shores of Lake Ontario and part of Durham Region, Ajax was named after a WWII British Royal Navy cruiser. This military-inspired moniker speaks to Ajax’s war-born nature as a community: mostly a sparsely-inhabited stretch of Pickering township prior to the war, Ajax was established in 1941 when a manufacturing plant for shells was built there, eventually employing over 9,000 people and laying the foundations for the future town.

After the plant and much of the community was leased to the University of Toronto after the war, Ajax finally received its own town council and local government in 1954. The town grew after the Village of Pickering and parts of the Township of Pickering were annexed to Ajax in 1974.

Now lying along the lake between Pickering and Whitby, Ajax is a vibrant and comfortable community with a white majority populations and large minorities, especially of Black Canadian and South Asian background. Its major employers today include DuPont and Volkswagen. Ajax’s primary health services centre is the Ajax and Pickering General Hospital, opened in 1954 but renovated and expanded many times since, most recently in 2007. Ajax’s future is bright, especially with the beginning of construction this year on the anticipated Pat Bayly Square, a major mixed-use development intended to revitalize Ajax’s downtown, featuring residential units, commercial and retail spaces, and a brand new civic centre for the town.
