Current Cultural Exhibitions in Toronto – November 2014

After opening on Halloween and continuing at the TIFF Bell Lightbox until January 25th, Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition provides a unique and exhaustive look into the work of the legendary British film director. Drawing from the legendary auteur’s own extensive archives, this exhibition of photographs, letters, screenplays, notes and other production materials, and original props and costumes from his films explore the unforgettable and often controversial cinema that Kubrick crafted in his half-century-long career. The Lightbox will also host screenings of Kubrick’s films in their state-of-the-art theatres during the run of the exhibition; check out Stanley Kubrick: A Cinematic Odyssey on the TIFF website for more details and screening dates and times.

Two exciting exhibitions of art are currently featured in the halls of the Art Gallery of Ontario, starring works by one of Canada’s most prominent painters of the 20th Century and perhaps the greatest artist of the Italian Renaissance. More than 100 works by Alex Colville are on display in a definitive retrospective of the late Ontario-born, Nova Scotia-based painter’s iconic and symbolically-charged images produced over a career spanning seven decades. On since August 23rd and running until January 4th, this must-see exhibition also explores the Order of Canada recipient’s influence in wider popular culture as well as on fellow artists.

Michelangelo: Quest for Genius opened on October 18th and runs until January 11th, featuring 29 drawings by the 15th- and 16th-century painter, sculptor, and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti on loan from Florence, Italy. The drawings provide an unvarnished perspective on the master’s artistic process. These works are supplemented by sculptures from the AGO’s collection by 19th-century French sculptor Auguste Rodin, whose classically-influenced works were inspired by Michelangelo’s sculptural oeuvre.

Visit the Art Gallery of Ontario website for more information on both exhibitions and to purchase admission tickets, and check out TIFF’s site for similar info and ticketing options for Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition.
