From July 10th to 26th, Canada’s largest city will play host to the largest international multi-sport competition ever held in the country. The 2015 Pan American Games will take place in Toronto this summer, bringing thousands of athletes and many more thousands of spectators from 41 countries across the Western Hemisphere to the Greater Toronto Area for competitions in 36 different sports. The 2015 Parapan Am Games will also be held in the Toronto region August 7th to 15th.
Venues across the Greater Toronto Area will play host to competitions and ceremonies. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the Rogers Centre in downtown Toronto. Exhibition Place will host many events as well as the international broadcast centre. Venues have been built, expanded, or adapted for Games events on the University of Toronto’s St. George and Scarborough campuses, at York University, in Etobicoke, and on the harbour. New or existing venues in Markham, Oshawa, Mississauga, Milton, Whitby, Ajax, Haliburton, Hamilton, and St. Catharines will also welcome athletes and spectators for the Pan Am Games.
In addition to the multitude of sporting events, July and August will see the musical, cultural, and entertainment festival of Panamania take over locations across Toronto for 35 days. Free public concerts and events will be held at Nathan Phillips Square, CIBC Pan Am Park at Exhibition Place and Ontario Place, and the Distillery District throughout July and August featuring acts from across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Ticketed events in dance, theatre, comedy, and the visual arts will also feature as part of the hemispheric cultural celebration of Panamania.
Please be advised that transportation on all of Toronto’s networks and arteries is expected to be heightened during the Pan Am Games. Travel times along the roads and freeways will increase, and public transit will most likely be busier than normal.
