Global Alliance Worldwide Chauffeured Services operates in the Greater Toronto Area of Southern Ontario, Canada. Although Global Alliance provides services around the world through our network of affiliates, the core of our services are performed in Toronto and its surrounding region. In this continuing feature, we will detail notable locations and communities in the Greater Toronto Area (or GTA) where we often provide limousine service. Our destination today is Whitby, a community to the east of Toronto.

Located east of Ajax and west of Oshawa along the north shore of Lake Ontario, Whitby is part of Durham Region and is home to the headquarters of this regional municipality. First surveyed in 1792 and named after a town in Yorkshire, England, the town site was settled around 1800, its core downtown area built up by 1836, and finally incorporated in 1855. The town and township were amalgamated in 1968, in the midst of decades of rapid population growth and economic development.

Many of Whitby’s 122,000 residents commute to other parts of the GTA for work, although Whitby is also home to many major local and regional employers. Well connected to Ontario’s road and rail network, Whitby is also a hub for water transportation and recreational marine craft due to Whitby Harbour, a key factor in the town’s history and now home to a 450-berth marina as well as the Whitby Yacht Club.

Whitby is home to numerous cultural sites, including Whitby Courthouse Theatre, the Whitby Public Library, and the adjacent Celebration Square, home to summer festivals and cultural events. It also features historical sites such as Trafalgar Castle School, an independent girls’ school founded in 1876, and Camp X, a secret spy training facility during World War II (which is no longer extant, but whose location is marked by a plaque).
