Greater Toronto Area Locations: Vaughan

Global Alliance Worldwide Chauffeured Services operates in the Greater Toronto Area of Southern Ontario, Canada. Although Global Alliance provides services around the world through our network of affiliates, the core of our services are performed in Toronto and its surrounding region. In this continuing feature, we will detail notable locations and communities in the Greater Toronto Area (or GTA) where we often provide limousine service. Today, we visit the growing northern suburb of Vaughan.

Vaughan is a municipality of 288,000 people, the fifth-largest city in the GTA and the 17th largest city in Canada. It was Canada’s fastest-growing city from 1996 to 2006, its population rocketing upwards by 80%. First settled in 1792 and incorporated in 1850, Vaughan remained a small town of a few thousand until after the Second World War, when increased immigration led to population growth. Becoming a part of York Region in the 1970s, Vaughan was incorporated as a city in 1991. Its boundaries are defined as Steeles Avenue to the south, Highway 38 to the east, Highway 50 to the west, and just past King Vaughan Road to the north.

Like much of the GTA, Vaughan is a diverse, multicultural community. Its largest ethnic group is Italians, who made up over 33% of the city’s population as of 2011 and are concentrated in the neighbourhood of Woodbridge. This large Italian-Canadian community has given Vaughan a number of restaurants, delis, bakeries, shops, banquet halls, and other Italian-Canadian cultural institutions and made the city an attractive location for new migrants. Other major ethnic groups in Vaughan include Jewish, Russian, Polish, Indian, and Chinese.

Several major attractions bring many visitors to Vaughan each year. Vaughan Mills, a major shopping centre opened in 2004, attracts 13.5 million shoppers each year. Canada’s Wonderland, the largest amusement park in Canada known for its roller coasters, rides, and waterpark, operates from late April until early November in the community of Maple. Near Wonderland is Reptilia Zoo, a 25,000 square-foot reptile zoo and education centre. The McMichael Canadian Art Collection in the community of Kleinburg features one of Canada’s finest fine art collections, including numerous works by the Group of Seven.
