Southern Ontario Locations: Brantford

Global Alliance Worldwide Chauffeured Services operates out of the Greater Toronto Area in Southern Ontario, Canada. Although Global Alliance provides services around the world through our network of affiliates, the core of our services are performed in Toronto and its surrounding region. In this continuing feature, we will detail notable locations and communities in the Golden Horseshoe of Southern Ontario where we often provide limousine service. Today, we visit the city of Brantford.

Brantford is located in southwestern Ontario, southwest of Toronto and straight west of Hamilton. Its city population is over 97,000, with over 134,000 inhabitants in the larger metropolitan area. Established on the Grand River, Brantford is named for the 18th-century Mohawk tribe leader Joseph Brant, who fought with distinction on Great Britain’s side in the Seven Years’ War and the American Revolutionary War (many of Brant’s people still dwell in the area on the Six Nations of the Grand River reservation, the most populous in Canada).

Brantford, like many of its now-larger neighbouring Southern Ontario communities, grew through the 19th and 20th Centuries from a small agricultural settlement to a thriving industrial town to the modern city it is today. But for a city of its size, Brantford has an uncommonly rich history. The oldest church building in Ontario, the Mohawk Chapel, was built in 1785 and still stands, the province’s first Anglican church and officially a Chapel Royal of the British Crown (as well as a National Historic Site of Canada).

Another National Historic Site in Brantford is the Bell Homestead, where Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1874; the Henderson Home, also located at the site (moved from its original downtown location), was the first headquarters of the Bell Telephone Company of Canada, which persists to this day as one of the country’s largest media conglomerates. Brantford is also the hometown of Wayne Gretzky, generally considered the greatest hockey player of all time.

Cultural attractions in Brantford include the historic Brant County Courthouse (built in 1852), the Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts, the Brantford OLG Casino, and the Brantford Public Library. Brantford hosts many annual festivals, including a pair of hockey tournaments (an international ice hockey competition and a street hockey competition) bearing Wayne Gretzky’s name.
