Southern Ontario Locations: Belleville

Global Alliance Worldwide Chauffeured Services operates in the Greater Toronto Area of Southern Ontario, Canada. Although Global Alliance provides services around the world through our network of affiliates, the core of our services are performed in Toronto and its surrounding region. In this continuing feature, we will detail notable locations and communities in the Greater Toronto Area (or GTA) where we often provide limousine service. Today we’ll make a stop at the South Central Ontario city of Belleville.

Located at the mouth of the Moira River on the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario’s northern shore, Belleville has a population of over 50,000, with over 92,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area. It is the seat of Hastings County, with connections to the important arterial Ontario Highways 2 and 401.

What is now Belleville was originally the site of an Anishinaabe First Nations village before being settled by United Empire Loyalists in the Late 18th Century. Built around an early sawmill and distillery, Belleville was incorporated as a village in 1836 and as a town in 1850. It had a population of 2,040 residents by 1846, and became a key junction of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1856. Booming lumber trade and successful farms in the region catalyzed economic growth. Belleville was incorporated as a city in 1877, four years after the completion of its ornate Victorian Gothic town hall, which is still a local architectural highlight today and in use as Belleville City Hall. Another historic highlight in Belleville is Glanmore National Historic Site, an ornate mansion designed and built for a wealthy financier in 1883.

Belleville is home to many corporate offices and manufacturing firms. Its major malls are Bay View Mall and Quinte Mall. The Belleville Senators, the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, have been based in the city since the fall of 2017 and play their home games at Yardmen Arena. Belleville will soon be home to Shorelines Belleville, the first new OLG (Ontario Lottery & Gaming) casino to be built in the province in a decade. Belleville is also proximate to Prince Edward County, a popular wine, cider, and farming region which includes the unique Sandbanks Provincial Park on the coast of Lake Ontario.
