Global Alliance Worldwide Chauffeured Services operates in the Greater Toronto Area of Southern Ontario, Canada. Although Global Alliance provides services around the world through our network of affiliates, the core of our services are performed in Toronto and its surrounding region. In this continuing feature, we will detail notable locations and communities in the Greater Toronto Area (or GTA) where we often provide limousine service. Today’s location is the GTA’s second-largest municipality, the city of Hamilton.
Nestled on the western end of Lake Ontario, Hamilton has a population of half a million inhabitants, with 700,000 residents in the larger metro area. This makes the port and industrial centre in the west of the Golden Horseshoe region the third-largest city in Ontario and ninth-largest in Canada.
Conceived, named after, and built on land purchased by businessman and politician George Hamilton shortly after the War of 1812, Hamilton gained official city status in 1846. It grew into a major manufacturing centre through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with steel factories being especially important. Although much of the manufacturing industry has left Hamilton, the working-class labour heritage remains a strong feature of 
the city’s identity, and Hamilton is often referred to as Steeltown or Steel City even today. Education and medical services are now a major part of Hamilton’s economy, with the city’s historic campus of the world-renowned McMaster University a focal point for both sectors.
Hamilton’s urban geography is defined by Lake Ontario and the city’s large harbor, as well as by the Niagara Escarpment, which splits the city into higher and lower areas (the upper neighbourhoods are referred to as The Mountain, although the highest elevation is around 800 feet above lake level). The Bruce Trail, a favourite among hikers, runs along the Escarpment, and passes many of the city’s over 100 waterfalls.
Hamilton’s downtown core features the Jackson Square Mall, FirstOntario Centre (formerly known as Copps Coliseum), and the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the third-largest public art gallery in Canada. Dundurn Castle, an impressive neoclassical mansion completed in 1835, is a National Historic Site located in the city. Hamilton has increasingly developed an active cultural community, attracting artists, musicians, and a robust theatre scene. The city is also known for its sports teams, namely the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League and the Hamilton Bulldogs, a former minor-league but now major junior hockey team. John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, the only international airport in the Golden Horseshoe of Southern Ontario besides Toronto Pearson, is Hamilton’s major air transport hub.
